'What Safety Means to Me!'

Health Savings Options

Postal employees who want to save money for future medical expenses have several options during this year's open season, which runs from November 12 through December 10.

If you enroll in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), you may be eligible to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA).

An HSA allows you to pay for current health expenses and save for future medical expenses on a tax deductible or pretax basis. An HSA is yours to keep — even if you change health plans or leave the Postal Service.

Additionally, some plans offer Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs), which are funds you can use to help cover out-of-pocket medical expenses. HRAs are generally available to employees who enroll in a Consumer-Driven Health Plan (CDHP).

If an HDHP or CDHP plan doesn’t meet your needs, you can sign up for a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), which allow you to set aside money pretax to pay for health and dependent care expenses.

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

 

Native American Heritage Month, which honors American Indians and Alaska Natives, begins November 1.

 

The observance is held each November to celebrate the cultures, histories, traditions and contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

 

USPS employs more than 4,000 individuals who identify themselves as American Indian or Alaska Natives. The American Indian and Alaska Native population in the United States is about 5.2 million, according to U.S. Census data.

 

Through the years, USPS has issued several stamps honoring American Indians and their contributions. Examples include Indian Hunting Buffalo (1898), the first stamp to portray a uniquely Native American theme; four American Folk Art stamps (1977); and 10 Art of the American Indian stamps.

Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

South Florida Dream Team members support Breast Cancer Awareness Month with pink ribbons.

Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamps are sold at Post Offices throughout the year. More than one billion stamps have been sold since its inception in 1998, raising more than $87.8 million for breast cancer research.

In the South Florida District, Sales and Services Associates (SSAs) sold $71,197.75 in Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamps as of October 28, 2018. Carol City Branch Sales and Services Associate (SSA) Joyce Stiles is credited with stamp sales that totaled $11,202.75. This accomplishment ranks Stiles as one of the top 25 SSAs in Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp sales in the country.

In addition to the Breast Cancer Research stamp, the Postal Service offers two other fundraising stamps. The Save Vanishing Species semipostal stamp, first issued in 2011, has raised more than $5.2 million to help protect threatened and vanishing species. The Alzheimer’s semipostal stamp was issued in 2017 and has raised more than $524,000 to fund Alzheimer’s research.
