Informed Delivery Reaches 25 Million

Since its national launch in 2017, Informed Delivery has continually evolved to meet subscribers’ changing needs.

Informed Delivery has reached 25 million subscribers, another milestone for the free online feature that is helping the Postal Service to bridge digital and physical communications.

Informed Delivery allows consumers to digitally preview their incoming mail and manage their packages from computers, smartphones and other devices.

Since its national launch in 2017, the feature has continually evolved to meet subscribers’ changing needs. This spring, consumers are using Informed Delivery to complete their 2020 census questionnaires online, and recently, the Postal Service began testing email notifications to some subscribers within 20-30 minutes of the time their mail is actually delivered.

In addition to benefiting consumers, Informed Delivery is proving useful to businesses and other organizations, allowing them to add interactive content to the Informed Delivery notifications that consumers receive. When a customer clicks on this content, he or she is taken to the company’s website to receive offers, coupons or more information about the firm’s products and services.

How Ready Are You?

National Hurricane Prevention Week is May 3 - 9. During this observance, the South Florida Postal Blog will feature a daily segment on how you and your family can get ready for the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which officially begins on June 1.

Colorado State University researchers forecast that the 2020 Atlantic basin hurricane season will experience above-normal activity.

The team predicts that the Atlantic basin will experience 16 named tropical storms this year. That same region usually experiences 12.1 storms. The team also forecasts the Atlantic will experience eight hurricanes (the average is 6.4 per year), 35 hurricane days (as opposed to the average of 24.2) and four major hurricanes (as opposed to 2.7).

The probability of at least one major hurricane (category 3, 4 or 5) making landfall somewhere along the continental U.S. coastline this year is 69% (the average last century was 52%). 

The U.S. East Coast, including Florida, has a 45% chance of experiencing a major hurricane (last century’s average was 31%).

The Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville, Texas, has a 44% chance of experiencing a major hurricane in 2020, compared to a 30% chance last century. 

There is a 58% chance of at least one major hurricane tracking into the Caribbean. Last century, the average was 42%.

'Making Your Mark' in May

May is “Older Americans Month.”

The 2020 theme is “Make Your Mark.” This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. 

This year’s theme highlights the difference everyone can make – in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty, and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month," the prelude to "Older Americans Month."

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation asking that, in some way,  the nation pay tribute to older persons in their communities.
