Public Service Recognition Week

The following message is from Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan:

This week, May 6-12, is Public Service Recognition Week. Cities, counties, states, federal agencies and service organizations across the United States are joining together to honor public servants and connect Americans with their government.

The Postal Service is the face of public service in every community, all year round. During this special week, I would like to express my appreciation to the 644,000 dedicated men and women in our organization who fulfill our mission.

Like teachers, firefighters, police officers and countless others, Postal Service employees are among the civil servants who strengthen our communities. We connect America, we drive commerce and we are good neighbors. We are here to serve the public every day.

Furthermore, we don’t hesitate to go the extra mile, and it is the generous spirit of service that truly characterizes the men and women who sustain the Postal Service’s rich legacy.

Americans will see that spirit in action at the end of Public Service Recognition Week on May 12, with the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Last year, letter carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food from 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.

That’s a remarkable accomplishment, and postal employees go above and beyond the call of duty in many other ways, too. We know our customers and are often the first to notify emergency responders when someone is sick or injured, a child is lost, or a fire is spotted.

Whether we’re delivering the mail or doing so much more, Americans are constantly reminded of the Postal Service’s indispensable role in the national community.
