Miami Transportation Supervisor Ray Ballou found several letters dated 1955 and 1956 without an envelope in a hamper. The letters were accompanied with a note with the customer’s name, Barbara Moon, in the heading, as well as with another letter dated October 28, 2011.
Determined
to solve this mystery, Ballou brought the letters to Miami P&DC Executive
Secretary Sheia Wright who in turn, contacted Manny Diaz in the Consumer and
Industry Contact Office. Diaz promptly
began his investigation to put together the pieces of the puzzle.
“I read all
the letters to obtain a clue to reunite the sender with the addressee,” Diaz
said.
He checked
the office files for complaints of missing mail and came up empty. Then he checked the White Pages to determine
the number of Moon entries. Diaz was
ready to make some calls to Moon residences across the country, when he noticed
the clue that brought it all together.
“I support
Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada” was printed on the bottom of the
letter. He contacted this organization
which put him in touch with Moon.
“I am astounded that these letters have been
found!” Moon beamed.
In October,
Moon mailed the letters inside a birthday card from Canada to her cousin, Lois, in
Crystal River, Florida. The card never
arrived.
“The
letters were over 50 years old; I kept them to read ‘in my old age which
recently just arrived.’ I thought my cousin would enjoy seeing and reading them
again after all these years,” Moon said.
“I am very
impressed that postal employees would go to such lengths to track down the
sender of these letters. Thank you very
much.”
