Heat stress is real so
know the signs and symptoms and seek help, if needed.
Heat Stroke
· Red, hot, dry skin, or excessive sweating· Very high body temperature
· Confusion
· Seizures
· Fainting
If these symptoms are
present, call 911 immediately. While waiting for help, place the individual
in a cool, shady area, remove any outer clothing and loosen clothing. Fan the individual and apply cold compresses
under the armpits. Wet the person with
cool water; apply ice packs, cool compresses, or ice, if available. Provide
fluids (preferably water) as soon as possible. Stay
with the individual until medical help arrives.
Heat Exhaustion
· Cool, moist skin· Heavy sweating
· Headache
· Nausea or vomiting
· Dizziness/Light headedness/Weakness
· Thirst
· Irritability
· Elevated heart rate
If these symptoms are present, have the person sit
or lie down in a cool, shady area. Give
the person plenty of water or other cool
non-caffeinated beverages to drink. Cool
off the person with cold compresses or ice packs. Take the person to the emergency room or
other medical clinic for treatment, if symptoms worsen or do not approve within
60 minutes.
Heat Cramps
· Muscle spasms and pain usually in the abdomen, arms,
and legs
