Recently,
Lead Safety Specialist Gale Williams and Safety Specialist John Zeigler visited
letter carriers at Jose Marti Station in Miami. They introduced a new safety
initiative --- the dog horn --- which was well received at this unit.
As a
reminder, if you encounter a dog, stand your ground, turn and face
it. Never turn your back on a dog or run away from it. Hold your satchel or
some other object in front of you and slowly back away, while making sure you
don’t stumble and fall or trip over objects. And now letter carriers have their
dog horn to help deter dog bites and attacks.
Carriers should fill out and maintain Dog Warning Cards for
addresses with dogs on every route and verify that scanners have an active dog
alert for delivery addresses with dogs. Carriers also should notify their
supervisor of dog incidents experienced on their routes. If necessary, the
U.S. Postal Service can send letters to customers with aggressive dogs and
suspend delivery to a residence or a neighborhood.
