Post Storm: Don't Let Pests Bug You

As we continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian and employees return to work, keep in mind that pools of standing or stagnant water become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of encephalitis, West Nile Virus or other mosquito-borne diseases.

The presence of wild animals in populated areas increases the risk of diseases caused by animal bites (i.e. rabies), as well as diseases carried by fleas and ticks.

Filth and debris left by the storm can also create excellent breeding conditions for insects. The key to controlling insects is removal of their breeding places such as any standing water or stagnant water. Use caution when out walking, snakes are looking for higher ground and will be out and about as well. Ants will be out in full force also looking for dry areas.

These safety tips offer protection from insects and animals:
-- Be aware of your surroundings.
-- Decrease the risk of mosquito and other insect bites by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and by using EPA-registered insect repellents that contain at least 20% DEET.
-- Ensure you empty water from barrels, old tires, cans and any other water holding items.
-- Keep doors closed as much as possible to keep out insects and animals.
-- Look before you reach into any mailbox or collection box.
-- Beware of all loose dogs, they may be frightened and excited.
-- Carry your satchel and dog spray at all times.
-- Wear light-colored clothing.
-- Stay out of tall grass, brush, or heavily wooded areas.
-- Avoid fragrances, including hair spray, scented soaps, lotions, and oils.
-- Report potentially hazardous conditions observed such as nest and standing water.
