October is National Stamp Collecting Month. To commemorate a hobby that began more than 150 years ago, USPS is encouraging adults and especially children to start their own collections.
Prospective hobbyists can start or add to their stamp collections with the Nature of America: Hawaiian Rain Forest stamp pane and stamped postal cards issued by the Postal Service to commemorate stamp collection.
Featuring a Hawaiian rain forest, this 2010 Nature of America collectable stamp pane is the 12th and final set in an educational series focusing on the beauty and complexity of major plant and animal communities in the United States.
USPS also has created a Nature of America: Hawaiian Rain Forest education kit, designed to bring to life these stamps and the collecting hobby for teachers and their students. Each lesson in the kit begins with an introduction that taps into students’ personal experiences and academic knowledge.
The National Stamp Collecting Month educational kit featuring the Nature of America: Hawaiian Rain Forest stamps will be available online in mid-October. Go to Community Activities and click on the “Community Connection” link.
