October is "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and in keeping with tradition, the Fort Lauderdale Main Office will be hosting an activity in support of this observance. Be sure to mark Thursday, October 21, from 9 am to 12 Noon, on your calendar. Details on this off-the-clock activity will be published as additional information becomes available.
In 1997, Congress authorized the issuance of the first semi-postal stamp for the specific purpose of raising funds from the American public to assist in finding a cure for breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Research (BCR) semi-postal stamp was issued on July 29, 1998, in Washington DC, during a ceremony at the White House. Congress legislated that the difference between the price of the stamp and the First-Class Mail rate, less program costs, be directed to two designated research agencies, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DOD) Medical Research Program.
To date, sales of this semi-postal stamp have raised more than $70.7 million for research.
