Automation revolutionized the way the Postal Service processed letter mail. Delivery Point Sequencing took it a step further — placing letter mail in the order of delivery. The Postal Service is applying that same kind of technology to processing flats — large envelopes, magazines, catalogs and circulars.
Beginning the week of September 20, Atlantic Branch, Chapel Lakes Branch, Coral Springs Branch, and Hibiscus Carrier Annex will have their flats mail sorted on the Flats Sequencing System (FSS). Earlier this month, the South Florida District added Everglades Branch, Snapper Creek Branch, Tamiami Branch, Weston Branch, and Westside Branch to the growing list of delivery units to benefit from FSS-processed mail.
The FSS Program allows the Postal Service to utilize sophisticated equipment to sort flats mail for letter carriers, who currently must manually sequence this mail before leaving the office on their routes. Using technology to sort flats mail into the order of delivery for letter carriers will increase efficiency in the office and allow carriers to deliver to their customers earlier in the day.
