Supervisor,
Distribution Operations Marina Santos represented the Postal Service as
spokesperson and tour guide. Santos beamed with pride as she escorted media
from one operation to the next.
“We
have about 300 regular employees, and for the holidays, we have added 110
temporary workers. We primarily process mail for 180 countries," she said. "This is our season, and we are more than ready to handle the
increase in package volume for our customers.”
Shipping
packages to friends and family around the world in time for the holiday season
can be as simple as taking a short trip to your computer with the tools, tips
and transactions available at usps.com. Whether ordering shipping
supplies, printing postage, getting information about mailing guidelines,
filling out required customs forms, or requesting free package pickup, the U.S.
Postal Service is ready to help international shippers.
In addition to international mail, employees
also handle APO (Air/Army Post Office), FPO (Fleet Post Office), and DPO
(Diplomatic Post Office) mail. Mail Processing Clerk Emma Muniz explained to
the NBC crew that all military locations, regardless of where they may be
located around the globe, are assigned a ZIP Code referred to as an APO/FPO/DPO
number. The Postal Service places APO/FPO/DPO mail on international commercial
passenger service and international cargo service aircraft from various cities.
When the plane lands overseas, the mail is transferred to the Military. The
mail is then handled by Military Postal Service representatives and transported
to the Military Post Office for distribution to the service member's unit for
delivery to the recipient.
