National Crime Victims’ Rights Week provides an opportunity for the US Postal Inspection Service to promote greater public awareness about victims’
rights and services.
The campaign, also is sponsored by the Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime and the National Center for Victims of Crime, promotes the rights of victims and the nation’s progress in advancing these rights.
General Analyst Damaris Santiago and Postal Inspector Blanca Alvarez of the US Postal Inspection Service Miami Division helped deliver this year's theme "Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim" to the South Florida community.
On April 23, 2012, Santiago and Alvarez participated in a Coral Gables Country Club event attended by 175 members of the community. They distributed awareness DVDs and provided tips on foreign lottery scams. Katherine Fernandez-Rundle, State Attorney for Miami-Dade County, was the keynote speaker; other participants were from the
Coral Gables Police Department, the Office of the Attorney General of Florida, and the National Crime Victims’ Rights Committee.
Later that day, Santiago attended the Broward Victims’ Right
Coalition ceremony at Davie's Garden of Reflection : A Place for Remembrance, a tribute
to victims in Broward County . Guest speakers included Miramar Chief of Police Keith Dunn and Davie Mayor Judy Paul, along with representatives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Hallandale Police Department, and the Broward Victim’s Rights Coalition.
Information about victim rights is available in Publication 308, Know
Your Rights, A Guide for Victims and Witnesses of Crime, and at the Victim
Witness Assistance website.
