Saturday, May 12, will be the
20th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers
(NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food
Drive . Many letter carriers will be wearing a “Stamp
Out Hunger” promotional tee-shirt while delivering their appointed rounds
leading up to, and including, the food drive.
Help your letter carrier “stamp out
hunger” on Saturday, May 12. Just leave
a bag of non-perishable food at your mailbox for your carrier to pick up during
his or her regular delivery that day.
Your letter carrier recommends canned soup, meats and fish, vegetables,
and fruits and juices; and boxed cereal, pasta, and rice. Your canned goods will be delivered to food
banks and pantries to help feed the hungry in your community.
To increase community awareness of
the largest one-day food drive in the nation, NALC Branch 2550 and the U.S.
Postal Service have invited the public to a kick off event at the Fort
Lauderdale Main Post Office Lobby from 10 am to 11 am on Tuesday, May 8. (This is an off-the-clock activity for postal
employees.) NALC and USPS representatives
will greet customers and provide a Publix bag promoting the upcoming food
drive. Letter carriers are delivering
these plastic, designated food drive bags to South Florida
residences throughout the week. (Remember,
these bags are First-Class Mail!)
Nationwide nearly 49 million Americans, including 16 million
children, are struggling with hunger.
These are often hard-working adults, children, and seniors who simply
cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even
days. In 2011 nationwide, generous
customers, including South Floridians , donated
70.2 million pounds of food, marking the eighth consecutive year that at least
70 million pounds were collected. This
Saturday, remember those who are less fortunate and leave some canned goods at
your mailbox.
