Juneteenth Celebration Highlights Lena Horne Stamp in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Postmaster David Guiney (right) presents an enlargement of the Lena Horne stamp to Executive Library Director Elaina Norlin (left) at the Juneteenth celebration at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It’s also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.

The Lena Horne stamp, the 41st addition to the Black Heritage Series, honors the achievements of the legendary performer and civil rights activist (1917-2010).

“Honoring Lena Horne is so appropriate, and we are grateful to have this stamp enlargement dedicated to the library on this occasion,” Norlin said. “Thank you to the Postmaster and the Fort Lauderdale Post Office for being a part of our celebration.”
