Saturday, May 14: 'Stamp Out Hunger'

Help “Stamp Out Hunger.”

The 24th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive is Saturday, May 14.

The top requested non-perishable food items are: cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry).

Just leave your non-perishable donations at your mailbox prior to your regular delivery. Carriers (city or rural) will pick up your canned goods for distribution to a food bank/pantry, and then to individuals who are in need in your community.

Starr Hunter, NALC Branch 1690 Food Drive Coordinator/Letter Carrier, Palms Central Carrier Annex (left) is making her appointed rounds to promote the Food Drive on Saturday, May 14. Also pictured are WRFM Radio Vice President, Community Relations Sari Vatske (center) and Host Tracy St. George (right). History:

The NALC National Food Drive is the outgrowth of a tradition of community service exhibited repeatedly by members of the letter carriers union over the years. These carriers, who go into neighborhoods in every town six days a week, have always been involved when something needed to be done, whether it be collecting funds for a charity like the Muscular Dystrophy Association, watching over the elderly through the Carrier Alert program, assisting the American Red Cross during time of disaster, or rescuing victims of fires, crime, and other mishaps.

For many years, a number of branches had collected food for the needy as part of their community service effort. Discussions were held by the NALC, U.S. Postal Service and AFL-CIO Community Services Department to explore a coordinated effort. A pilot drive was held in 10 cities in October, 1991, and it proved so successful that work began immediately on making it a nationwide effort.

Input from food banks and pantries suggested that late spring would be the best time since by then most food banks in the country start running out of donations received during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.

A revamped drive was organized for May 15, 1993—the second Saturday in May—with a goal of having at least one NALC branch in each of the 50 states participating. The result was astounding. More than 11 million pounds of food was collected—a one-day record in the United States—involving more than 220 union branches.

From Alaska to Florida and Maine to Hawaii, letter carriers did double duty—delivering mail and picking up donations. It just grew and grew from that point.

In 2010, the food drive surpassed the 1 billion pound park in total food collected over its history.

Tips for Tax Day, Monday, April 18

West Palm Beach Main Office Window Unit Retail Associate Pat Moody is all smiles during last year's tax season. Moody is ready to assist a deluge of customers expected to mail their income tax returns on Monday, April 18. Photo: Karin Nolf

If you have not yet filed your 2015 income tax return, you have a few extra days … Tax Day is Monday, April 18. The regular tax return filing deadline is April 15. However, due to the Washington D.C. Emancipation Day holiday being observed on April 15 instead of April 16, 2016, Tax Day is the following Monday.

Tax Day Tips:
  • Mail early in the day at any Post Office.  Be sure to verify Post Office hours of operation.
  • If depositing a tax return in a collection box on April 18, double check the pick-up time on the collection box. Your tax envelope must be deposited prior to the last scheduled pick-up time posted to receive the April 18 postmark.
  • Affix the correct postage. Some tax returns include many forms and require additional postage. For First-Class letter-sized envelopes, one ounce is 47 cents and 21 cents for each additional ounce. A two-ounce letter-sized envelope is 68 cents. A First-Class flat-sized (8 ½ X 11) envelope, the cost is 94 cents up to one ounce and 21 cents for each additional ounce. That’s $1.15 for a two-ounce flat-sized envelope.
  • Customers may purchase postage at the retail counter or at a Self-Service Ship and Mail Center (credit/debit card only) in the Post Office lobby. Stamps also are available at alternate retail access locations posted at usps.com.
  • Due to heightened security, mail that bears only postage stamps and weighs more than 13 ounces must be taken by the customer to a Post Office retail counter.
     Products and services

Priority Mail Express Service gets your tax return to many locations the next day guaranteed or your money back. Priority Mail Express includes online tracking and signature at delivery.

Priority Mail with USPS Tracking provides a receipt of mailing for recordkeeping purposes and allows the customer to confirm electronically at usps.com, or at 1-800-222-1811, that the mailing was delivered to the Internal Revenue Service.

First-Class Mail Service is an efficient, economical option to mail your return with the all-important April 18 postmark.

Proof of Mailing Services provide customers with peace of mind. Services prove that you mailed your tax return, verify that it was delivered or both:

Falling Prices to Impact Bottomline

The Postal Service will be forced to reduce prices for Forever stamps and other mailing products, effective Sunday, April 10.
The price of mailing a 1-ounce First-Class Mail letter will be 47 cents, down from 49 cents.
Letters with additional ounces will drop to 21 cents (from 22 cents), postcard prices will be 34 cents (from 35 cents), and letters and postcards to international destinations will fall to $1.15 (from $1.20).
Commercial prices will also decrease. The Postal Explorer site at http://pe.usps.gov/ has a complete list.
The price reductions are required because the Postal Regulatory Commission has ordered USPS to reverse a 4.3 percent exigent surcharge that has been in place since January 2014.
This is expected to worsen the Postal Service’s financial condition by reducing revenue and increasing net losses by approximately $2 billion per year.
“The exigent surcharge granted to the Postal Service only partially alleviated our extreme multi-year revenue declines resulting from the Great Recession, which exceeded $7 billion in 2009 alone,” PMG Megan J. Brennan said last month. “Removing the surcharge and reducing our prices is an irrational outcome considering the Postal Service’s precarious financial condition.”
The Retail and Customer Service Operations Blue Site at has a price change kit that includes a stand-up talk, quick reference sheet and FAQs. This information is available at http://blue.usps.gov/customerservicesoperationsandretail/home.shtml.

The Postal Service dedicated the Sarah Vaughan stamp March 29 in Newark, NJ, the celebrated jazz singer’s hometown.

“As one of the most compelling vocalists in American history, Sarah Vaughan was renowned for her artistic eloquence. Her dynamic vocal range, iconic vibrato and innovative phrasing helped to transform jazz and popular music,” said DPMG Ronald Stroman, who dedicated the stamp.

The ceremony, held at the Sarah Vaughan Concert Hall, featured a video tribute from Tony Bennett and performances from Melba Moore, Carrie Jackson and other singers.

Other participants included jazz singer Dianne Reeves and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Vaughan’s career spanned 50 years and included hits such as “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Broken-Hearted Melody” and “Make Yourself Comfortable.”

Vaughan won a Grammy Award for best jazz vocal performance in 1982 and received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1989, about a year before her death.
