The Guiding Light: Fort Jefferson Shines


Key West Postmaster Jane Evans (R) welcomed the community to the Fort Jefferson Lighthouse First-Day-Of-Sale Stamp Ceremony on July 23. Dan Kimball, Superintendent, Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Park Services (L) was the guest speaker who shared the history of the lighthouse and information on the restoration project currently underway. The Fort Jefferson Lighthouse, also known as the Garden Key Harbor Light, is in Dry Tortugas National Park on Garden Key, approximately 70 miles west of Key West.
Anne Shaver (R) accepts her award certificate, sheet of Gulf Coast Lighthouse stamps, and Fort Jefferson Lighthouse stamp enlargement for submitting the winning pictorial postmark entry of a Sooty Tern, a familiar bird in the Florida Keys. JT Thompson of One Human Family and chairperson of the selection committee (L) and Key West Postmaster Jane Evans (center) thanked Shaver for her participation.
Key West Distribution Clerk Pollie Alston's granddaughter, Kyra Alston (front), extends her arms to show just how much she loved the Lighthouse ceremony. Donna Chavis-White, Supervisor, Customer Service (L), and Karla Alston, Pollie Alston's daughter (R), also enjoyed the program.
