October 14: Fort Lauderdale Main PO to Host 'Breast Cancer Awareness Day'

The Fort Lauderdale Main Post Office at 1900 West Oakland Park Blvd will host "Breast Cancer Awareness Day" from 9 am to 1 pm on Wednesday, October 14. Learn about breast cancer prevention and receive information on free mammograms. Free bone density screenings will be available onsite.

Few things reach as many Americans each day as the U.S. Mail so postage stamps provide an opportunity to raise money and awareness in support of important social issues. The 55-cent Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp covers First-Class Mail postage plus generates funds for this important cause. The first semi-postal stamp in U.S. history, the Breast Cancer Research stamp was issued at the White House on July 29, 1998 and features artwork of a mythical "goddess of the hunt." To date, the stamp has raised more than $67 million for breast cancer research. By law, 70 percent of the net amount raised goes to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent goes to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense.
