Today, we take time to honor you and to remember the sacrifices you made and the courage it took to defend honor, duty, and country. We take time to remember your achievements, your courage and dedication, and to say thank you.

We have more than 2,000 veterans working in the South Florida District, and I am proud to have such a distinguished group of individuals representing the United States Postal Service. Our service members come from all walks of life, but share several fundamental qualities. They possess courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity --- all the qualities needed to serve a cause larger than one’s self.

Many of you didn’t ask to leave your homes to fight on distant battlefields. You didn’t go to war because you loved fighting. You were called to be part of something bigger than yourselves, ordinary people who responded in extraordinary ways in extreme times. You rose to the nation’s call because you wanted to protect a nation which has given all of us so much.

To the families who have lost loves ones, we offer our most heartfelt condolences.  Let us never forget the people who did not make it home. Remember those still serving in our prayers and never take for granted the sacrifices they make.
